The First Steps
The adoption staff at Families United Network would welcome the opportunity to assist you in completing your adoption. Once you decide to move forward with our agency, we will provide you with an application and information on completing your home study. For families that reside outside of Pennsylvania, we would be happy to aid you in your search for a qualified home study agency.
Once we have received the completed application, along with the non-refundable application fee, we will provide you with an agency adoption packet. This packet will include the agency’s domestic adoption retainer, recommended guidelines for developing appropriate and effective birth mother letters, family profiles and other important adoption related information, and resources that you can reference during the different stages of the adoption process.
The Birth Mother Letter
Today, thousands of birth mothers and prospective adoptive parents seek out their adoption partners through internet searches. For this reason, Families United Network believes that it is very important for prospective adoptive parents to take the time to develop sensitive and sincere “Dear Birth Mother” letters. These letters should chronicle important milestones in your lives as well as discuss your unique personal attributes. We realize that writing compelling birth mother letters is a challenging task, but remember, we are here to help. Agency staff will be available to assist you in the writing, editing and presentation of your “Dear Birth Mother” letter.
In addition, please keep in mind that birth mothers are unique individuals with their own hopes, dreams and aspirations. An important purpose of your personal “Dear Birth Mother” letter is to appeal to the birth mothers that you will be most compatible with, and improve the likelihood of a successful adoption outcome.
When you approve the final version of your “Dear Birth Mother” letter, you have completed an early critical step of your adoption journey.
The Next Steps
Once the process of preparing your “Dear Birth Mother” letter is complete, it is time to put this important tool to work for you. Families United Network will post your “Dear Birth Mother” letter on our web site to be viewed by birth mothers. We will also revisit your adoption plan with you to collectively determine a matching strategy that makes sense for you and your adoption goals and objectives.
Some birth mothers may choose to contact the agency directly, either by e-mail or phone, before contacting a prospective adoptive family, while others will feel more comfortable speaking candidly with you first. The Families United Network adoption staff believes that the first phone conversation that you have with a birth mother is another critical point in the adoption process. For this reason, we believe our client families should take several steps to properly prepare for this eventual phone call. Specifically for this situation, Families United Network has developed “Birth Mother Contact Guidelines" that is included in your adoption packet.
We are confident that by following these helpful instructions, you will increase your ability to have a meaningful and intimate first conversation with birth mothers. It is our hope that this first successful contact will lead to additional conversations so that both parties can determine if it makes sense to move forward with an adoption plan.
